JULIA JACKLIN TO PERTH, BEFORE THE BORDER CLOSES

Julia Jacklin sits in the same sonic field as artists like Angel Olsen and Aldous Hading. Her 2019 album Crushing went down a treat, with a perfect collection of songs both fragile and acoustic, to heart-felt and band-centred, such as 'Don't Know How to Keep Loving You'. Following on from Crushing, are two new songs 'CRY' and the 'to Perth, before the border closes', which is accompanied by a music video made by Julia herself, set in remote, natural and manmade deserted places. There's a disparity between the mood in the beginning, to the rest of the song. It begins with Julia's vocals soft and close, over gently strummed electric guitar, creating a downcast tone. However, the song gradually picks up in momentum, with addition of bass, drums, expressive electric guitar and uplifting vocal harmonies, completely changing the hue of the song in which it began. Julia says “I’ve moved around a lot the last 5 years; chasing things, love, work, something new, whatever and there’s always this fear that I’m leaving good things behind just to go somewhere else and be lonely. Whispering ‘everything changes’ to myself helps get me to sleep at night. I started writing this song in Melbourne and finished it in Perth. It was like a little song bridge between the two cities to make the change easier.”. -Ellie Rose-Davies
